An American flag, certificate and medallion were sent to Myers Elementary School from FOB Walton, Kandahar, Afghanistan.

On March 28, Myers Elementary received a certificate and an American flag from FOB Walton, Kandahar, Afghanistan. The flag was flown over the base on March 10, 2014, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for the christmas stockings sent to the troops at this base during the 2013 Christmas season.

The certificate says:

Know ye that this flag was flown in the face of the enemy, on the frontier of the free world…a beacon of American resolve following the attacks of September 11, 2001, bearing witness to the destruction of terrorist forces threatening the freedom of the United States of America and the World.

For the last three years, students at Myers have participated in the Stockings for Troops campaign, sending stockings stuffed with cards, candy and other Christmas goodies to troops stationed around the world.

“We should all be very proud and thankful that we have so many citizens willing to join our armed forces to protect us, our country, and our freedoms,” said Myers Principal Terri Harpster. “Deployment is very difficult and stressful, not only for the service member, but the service member’s entire family. When someone enlists in the armed services, their entire family sacrifices with them.

“This project gives us an opportunity to serve with those men and women and families who have sacrificed so much for us”

The campaign is organized by Miltary Families Ministry.

The flag, certificate and a medallion are on display in the case outside of the Myers Elementary library for students and teachers to view.
