This year, senior Miranda Lowery was selected to represent Bellwood-Antis at the statewide debate sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh for its college in high school debate class. The debate this year is on May 1st at North Allegheny High School.

Every year Pitt gives a different theme to schools in the CHS program to debate. Everyone in the CHS debate class has to debate one of the themes in front of the school. The debates are then videotaped and sent into Pitt. Pitt then picks one student to represent each school at the statewide debate.

This year’s theme was “In high school, discovery of learning should be more important than a pathway to a career.” At Bellwood-Antis Lowery’s taped debate focused on the emphasis on standardized tests.

Bellwood-Antis is the only school not in Pittsburgh that is part of the CHS program. Lowery will be going up against students from different schools.

The schools that are part of the CHS program are Central Catholic, Steel Valley, North Hills, Seneca Valley, Pine Richland, Chartiers Valley, Freeport, Montour, Quaker Valley, Black Hawk, North Allegheny and our very own Bellwood-Antis.

CHS Argument teacher Mr. Naylor said, “I’m really proud of Miranda for being selected. She joins a group of very successful BAHS students to be chosen for this honor. She’s an excellent speaker and she’s very well organized. Most of all, she’s always ultra-prepared for her debates.”
