During the month of September, Bellwood-Antis Schools are selling gold ribbons for National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
In honor of Maddie Shura, the Myers Elementary student who succumbed to cancer in April, and all children who battle cancer, students and faculty can purchase gold ribbons for a requested donation of $1. All donations will benefit local children with cancer and also fund research to help find a cure.
Heading up the sale of the gold ribbons are the Bellwood-Antis Varsity cheerleaders. Students can purchase the gold ribbons in the cafeteria hallway during lunch period. You can also purchase car decals and bracelets.
These items will also be on sale at the varsity football game on September 8 against Claysburg-Kimmel.
Sidney Patterson, who is the varsity cheer captain, said that the ribbons are about remembrance as much as support.
“For my coaches, squad, and myself, wearing the ribbon isn’t just about showing support, but remembering our special teammate and keeping her close to our hearts,” Sidney said in reference to Maddie, who became an honorary member of the cheerleading squad last season.
The Gold Ribbon Football Game takes place September 8 at Memorial Stadium. Anyone who purchased gold ribbons can wear them to the game, and Maddie as well as other children with cancer will be remembered during half time.
