End of the Year Blues
Students & Teachers Push Through the Final Days of the School Year
Things weren’t always this cheery for senior Natalie Dumin, shown here with Zach Mock, when she was choosing a school for next year.
It’s the last few days of school. Students and teachers are ready to leave for the summer or in some cases forever. Whether it’s the sad feeling of not seeing your friends for a while or the new-found nerves for starting college, many B-A students have the end of school blues.
Many teachers find it hard to have finals in such a small time limit. Each subject area has a designated double period for finals.
Now finals are over, classes are done, and students are just waiting for the last days to be over.
“With the final exam schedule and Keystones and school activities, it is difficult to fit everything in prior to the end of the year. I find that it isn’t hard to keep them busy. It’s hard to finish everything at the end of the year,” English teacher Ms. Kim Trostle said.
“It was a crunch and it’s hard to find time to allow kids to do their final when they were absent to take it,” history teacher Mr. Matt McNaul said.
“It’s nice that the students do have to take two finals per day,” added high school math teacher Mrs. Riddle, who was relieved students didn’t have to squeeze all their finals in one day.
Not only do teachers have to worry about students making up finals but also keeping their students entertained the last few days of school.
“I try different types of literature for students at the end of the year. It’s a little easier with English because I can find a lot of films and projects that connect with what we read in class,” said Ms. Trostle.
“It’s a challenge but I try to come up with different Math activities to do each day,” said Mrs. Riddle.

Students also think it’s a challenge to make it through the last few days of school.
“It’s nice that we watch movies because it gives me a chance to talk with my friends that I’m going to miss during the summer,” said freshman Alexis Kensinger.
Many teachers do more than show movies. High School biology teacher Ms. Denise Shimmel uses the last days of school as an opportunity to do fun learning activities she may not be able to do during the heart of the school year. During the last week of school, Ms. Shimmel does dissections, a blood typing lab and a DNA lab, extracting DNA from strawberries.
For other students, it might not be staying entertained, but it might be the sad part of school being over.
“It went by really fast,” added Jordan McCracken, a ninth grader.
“It’s sad that so many teachers are leaving, and that we are getting a lot of new teachers next year,” freshman Tierra Mahute stated.
The best part about school coming to the end is the things to look forward to next year.
“Not having third lunch,” said Ali McCaulley, a freshman.
“I’m excited to not be a freshman,” said Tierra.
