Are seniors ready for college?
Seniors should be starting to prepare for college now
September 25, 2014
Many Bellwood-Antis seniors have applied for college but, many haven’t. Mrs.Butler, B-A’s new guidance counselor, has some advice for those who are thinking about applying, and even those who aren’t applying at all.
“Definitely right now is a good time to start applying to colleges. Early admission is October to November. You definitely want to apply before Thanksgiving. If you aren’t planning on going to college, students should be getting a resume ready and be looking for jobs,” she said.

Students who haven’t taken SAT’s or those who aren’t happy with their scores from the spring should be taking them this fall.
“Get involved in as many activities as you can. If you’re not sure of what you did back in 9th grade you should start making a list of all the activities that you have done,” Mrs. Butler said.
Contrary to popular belief, senior year is not the time to take it easy.
“Don’t blow off your senior year. Colleges still request a final transcript of your grades. And they can revise a decision depending on senior year grades,” Mrs. Butler said.
The big question besides school activities is community service hours. Is it needed, or is it not for college entrance?
“Community service hours depend on the school. They will ask that when you apply. Some schools require it and some don’t. But it’s a good idea to get some hours just in case,” she said.
Some seniors at Bellwood-Antis have already applied to college, like Trenton Creppage and Calvin Amato.
“I sent in my application to IUP. They had me pick my major and get a letter of recommendation from teachers,” said Calvin.
“I went on many recruiting visits. The colleges I’m looking at are Slippery Rock, Shippensburg, La Roche, and Mount Aloysius,” said Trenton.
Other seniors like Lindsey McCaulley and Sapphire McCredy haven’t applied for colleges yet at all.
“I took my SAT’s, but I need to make sure I’m applying to the right colleges, and I need to tour the colleges and campuses,” said Lindsey.
“I’m going to apply to IUP, and I already took my SAT’s so that’s what’s next,” said Sapphire.
