Friday, 21 2020 CHS debates.

Every year the CHS debate class hosts live debates in front of the school that are recorded and eventually sent into the University of Pittsburgh to be reviewed. One debater is then chosen to debate at the annual CHS debates in Pittsburgh.

Last year, the debate class managed to have their live debate, but unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the debates in Pittsburgh were cancelled.

At the start of the year, it was uncertain whether or not debates in front of the school would be possible due to COVID guidelines.  However, High School Principal Mr. Richard Schreier gave approval last week for the debate class to host live debates in front of school.

These debates will be held in the auditorium.  They will possibly be available to the entire senior class, and other honors classes that wish to come and watch throughout the day.  The topics for the debates will be centered around the following prompt: Today’s youth are best equipped to move America forward.

Although the school-wide debates will be taking place, the debates in Pittsburgh were cancelled for the second straight year.

“I’m excited to go in front of my classmates and debate, but I’m a little nervous also,” said Zach Mallon.

Its a good thing that the school-wide debates were approved for this year or else it would have broken the ten year streak of live debates in front of the student body.

“I’m really excited to be able to hold the debates in front of a live audience,” said Mr. Naylor, who has taught debate for 14 years.

He went on to say, “For years, this has been not just a nice academic tradition but a way of recruiting kids who see what it means to take part in formal debate.”

The exact date for the debates have not yet been decided but they will take place some time in March.

The CHS debate class hopes to see a large audience even if it is a little nerve-racking.
