It didn’t end the way they wanted to, but the recently ended quiz bowl season ran very well for the Bellwood-Antis junior high Scholastic Scrimmage team.

In fact, it was one of the best seasons the Bellwood-Antis team has had in years. The team placed second in the final round of the IUO8 Quiz Bowl. In the semi-final round they beat Williamsburg 2-0 in a best of 3 match.  They lost to Hollidaysburg in a best-of-five match in the finals 3-2.

Coach Kathy Taylor said, “Our team preformed extremely well. It was a hard-fought match against Hollidaysburg with very few questions going unanswered between both teams.

Although the team lost in the final round, it placed first in the regular season. Their record in the regular season was 11-1.

“I feel we worked very well together and stepped up,” said team member Holden Schreier. “The team we played in the finals was very talented and we were happy to get that far.”

Briley Campbell said the activity was more than just academics.

“We all did out very best and had a lot of fun together,” she said. “I’m happy with our result and how long we all stuck in there.”

Team members included: 9th: Briley Campbell, Ryan Marinak, Holden Schreier(Captain), Derek Stivers, Emily Zacker. 8th: Julien Beaver, Anthony Berardi, Marissa Cacciotti, Cooper Lovrich, Eli Moser, Lily McNelis. 7th: Eli Bianchini and Evelyn Toland.

Team members like Emily Zacker felt like being on the tea was “an honor.”

“I’m looking forward to next year when the stakes are even higher,” she said. “I’d like to thank Mrs. Taylor for all of the time and effort she puts into Scholastic Scrimmage and for encouraging me to join in the first place.”
