Bellwood-Antis had the perfect game plan to stall Tyrone in a Backyard Brawl basketball game at B-A on Wednesday, but executing it for four quarters, with a young team against a group of seasoned vets was a big ask.
The Blue Devils competed early on before ultimately being put away in the second half, when Tyrone’s physicality on defense halted any of B-A’s momentum on offense.
The boys fell with a final score of 63-34 and dropped their eleventh of the year. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, improved to 9-2 and snapped a two-game slide.
Sophomore guard Jackson Dorminy guided the B-A offense with timely drives and long distance shooting. He registered 18 points and was the only Blue Devil to reach double digits.
“I stayed patient from outside the three point line and waited for an opportunity to drive or shoot,” Dorminy said.
After getting behind by as many as 13 in the first half, Bellwood-Antis rallied and trailed just 30-22 heading into the half after Collin McClellan made a big basket in traffic with just seconds left. However, Tyrone came fast out of the gates in the third and silenced B-A’s offense.
The Eagles’ offense relied on two double digit scorers: Kendall Lehner, who landed 25 points, and Eli Woomer, who followed suit with 16 of his own.
The Blue Devils were limited to just four points in the third and fell behind 49-26.
Tyrone continued their offensive surge and added 14 more points to their total in the fourth. In all, the Devils were limited to only 12 second-half points.
The boys now travel to Forest Hills Friday at 6:00. This game is part of an LHAC boys-girls doubleheader. The Rangers are currently 13-1 on the year and 9-1 in conference play. This places them third in LHAC standings.
