Unlike a lot of teachers that may teach a student one time during their time in school, home economics teacher Ms. Harris has the opportunity to teach some of the same students throughout their middle and high school careers.
“I love it. I like to have the different conversations that I have everyday and seeing them grow throughout the years,” Ms. Harris said
Ms. Harris has been teaching in Bellwood for eight years. Before coming to B-A, she taught at Williamsburg for eight years
She currently teaches Home Economics, but another class she would love to teach is a fashion class, she said.
“I love to sew, and it would be awesome to see students make their own clothes,” she said.
As part of home Ec., students learn to cook, measure ingredients, sew, and budget for meals, among other things. Ms. Harris loves when students enjoy what they make in her class or even something new that they have sewn, and later showing her what they had made.
“My class is always entertaining. It’s fun and busy,” she said.
The only thing that she dislikes about teaching is forgetting that it is a dress down day, and she misses out on her chance to wear jeans.
Mrs. Harris’s teaching peers recognize how much she contributes to the school through her positive attitude alone.
“Ms. Harris is the best! She is extremely kind and funny,” said guidance counselor Mrs. Danielle McNelis. “She’s a great teacher and always goes out of her way to help students. She greets everyone with a smile and is consistently supportive, encouraging, and positive. We are lucky to have her at BA!”
