Registration for the 15th annual Freedom Ride in Tyrone PA is officially underway. It’s set to take place on the 4th of July. The race is a family fun event for all ages. You can ride competitively or cruise along at your own pace.
The ride goes from the Tyrone American Legion to Delgrosso’s Amusement park, and back to the Legion. This event raises money for the Van Zandt Veterans Administration Medical Center in Altoona.
There are many projects Freedom Ride has provided for, like refurbishing a van to allow veterans in wheel chairs to make their appointments and sponsoring an outing for veterans who live on the fifth and sixth floor of the VA hospital to go on a cruise of Lake Raystown. The group is currently in the process of refurbishing the Victory Garden at the VA hospital, which is an outdoor space for veterans to go to for a time to relax outside.
This event was founded by Bellwood-Antis and Tyrone Alumni. The B-A alums on the board include Lindsey Hess, Sean Riggle, Phil Hess, and Patrick Thornton. Board members from Tyrone include Doug Roseberry, Eric Latchford, and Eric Sloss.
The Freedom Ride was selected to receive the 2022 American Spirit & Excellence Award for a Volunteer Community Organization. This award recognizes an organization for selfless efforts in supporting their local VA medical center in caring for veterans.
Each year, members of both communities overflow the event, which is one of the top local community events of the summer.
The cost to participate is $20 for adults and $10 for children. You can register at www.freedomrideusa.com, or the morning of the race at the door. However, registering at the event does not guarantee you will receive a t-shirt.
