The Tyrone/Bellwood-Antis Golden Eagles earned a hard-fought 3–2 win over Bellefonte in double overtime Thursday night, advancing to the District 6 Class 3A championship game.
Grant Miller got the game-winning goal for Tyrone/B-A, which will be back in the District championship under Coach Alex Bartlett for the first time since 2020.
The match was close from start to finish, with both teams giving everything they had. Bellefonte took control early, leading 2–0 before Tyrone battled back to tie the game and force overtime.
In the first half, Bellefonte’s Connell Stabinger scored the opening goal at the 8:27 mark. Early in the second half, Stabinger assisted on another goal when Austin Larson knocked in a corner kick to give the Red Raiders a 2–0 advantage.
Tyrone began its comeback soon after. Miles Smearman scored an unassisted goal to cut Bellefonte’s lead to 2–1. With just over three minutes left in regulation, Tytus Novak found the net to tie the game at 2–2 and send it into overtime.
“The win vs Bellefonte was absolutely incredible,” stated head coach Alex Bartlett. “It was a near perfect game from the boys. We had a plan, and they executed it to perfection. All the credit goes to them”
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Golden Eagles struck again. Early in the second overtime, Miller was fouled in the box and converted the penalty kick to seal the 3–2 victory.
Both teams finished with 11 shots on goal. Bellefonte led in corner kicks, 4–3. Goalkeepers Elijah Davis (Bellefonte) and Devin Nardelli (Tyrone) each made five saves.
With the win, the Eagles moves on to face Hollidaysburg Tuesday night at 8 at Philipsburg-Osceola High School. Bellefonte ends its season with a 15–5 record.
“We need to come and attack the game with the same intensity and chip on our shoulder that we did against Bellewfonte,” Coach bartlett said when reflecting on his team’s third meeting this season with Hollidaysburg.
The Tigers have a pair of wins over Tyrone/B-A this season, and both were games decided by one goal.
