Three cheers for bacon!

It’s a food that definitely deserves a day of its own

Bellwood’s own Hometown Market is offering big sales on Bacon, just in time for International Bacon Day! (Did you really need another reason to buy bacon?)

While Labor Day might have all the fame this weekend, there’s another holiday you are sure to love. Today, September 5, is International Bacon Day!

Think about it… a whole day dedicated to one of the US’s most indulged (junk) foods. You might not believe how much bacon Americans consume.

International Bacon Day, although an unofficial holiday, is usually celebrated on the Saturday before (US) Labor Day. Typical International Bacon Day celebrations include bacon themed parties, which people make and eat dishes containing bacon themed food.

These include but are not limited to: bacon themed breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and even desserts & drinks. Some of the most popular dishes are jalapeno poppers and bacon and mac & cheese. A few people would even go as far as to put chocolate on their bacon.

Junior Tom Whiteford expressed his views on this culinary treat.

“I like how flavorful it is. The way it tastes just makes you feel happy!” he said.  “My favorite thing about bacon has to be the way it sizzles when you cook it!”

Just as y may not know when your favorite book was written but still love it anyway, the same applies with bacon. Although many people have a serious obsession with the food, many do not know about the history of bacon.

For the complete low-down on bacon, you can start by looking at the Definitive Guide to Bacon, but here’s the short version: bacon has been around since 1500 BC, so clearly it has stood the test of time. However, in recent years bacon has become more and more popular.

However, not everyone is a fan of this now-trendy food staple.

Junior Makayla Carles said, “I hate bacon. It is so disgusting and greasy! The only reason it is popular is because Americans love fatty foods!”
