Two-thousand Sixteen starts the new cycle of dietary guidelines provided by the United States government and the Obama Administration.
Every five years, government organizations come together in order to assemble new health regulations. According to Fortune Magazine, “The guidelines affect everything from food labeling to school lunch menus to advice given by doctors.”
To some, these new rules and regulations make sure that labeling foods is more of a hassle than ever before.
The laws are becoming stricter on what companies can and cannot hide from the customers. For example, vending machines must now make the nutrition facts readily available for customers looking for a quick snack, and in all foods added sugars must be kept below 10% of daily caloric intake.
School nurse Mrs. Kelly Hoover felt the new regulations were a good move.
“I think it’s a great idea,” said Hoover. “I think food companies tend to hide or downplay their nutritional content to increase sales. A lot of times, kids don’t know how bad something is for them.”
A study done by the FDA shows that Americans eat and drink about one-third of their calories away from home. Making calorie information available could help consumers make informed choices for themselves and their families.
