Girls win eleventh straight
Wrestlers fall to Glendale on Senior Night
Bellwood Girls Take Down Glendale To Seal ICC North.
February 9, 2016
Last night the lady Blue Devils defeated the Vikings of Glendale by a score of 72-40. B-A improved its record to 17-4 and finished their ICC North schedule with a record of 13-1.
Glendale fell to 13-9 and 5-9 in the conference.
Junior Karson Swogger carried the Blue Devils to their 11th straight victory, finishing the game with 35 points, three assists, three rebounds, and four steals. This was her 11th 30 plus point effort of the season.
Freshman Riley D’Angelo added 15 points for the Blue Devils and six players scored.
Swogger liked the way the team started the game.
“We came out very strong and the momentum we gained in the start carried over for the rest of the game,” she said.
B-A dominated the game from the opening tip, outscoring Glendale 46-20 in the first half.
“I have always like Coach K’s philosophy of a team being like the five fingers of the hand coming together to make a fist,” said assistant coach Kyley Longo. “When we come together like that and get something from everyone we are far more effective. That’s why last nights win was nice because we had so many people contribute to it.”
After the Blue Devils outscored the Vikings 23-6 in the third quarter extending their lead to 69-26, Coach Jim Swaney looked to rest his starters.
With B-A recently receiving the 5th seed in the District 6 AA playoffs, Swogger and the team want to start playing their best basketball of the season now.
Coach Longo said, “We are a team who has come a long way since the beginning of the season and the last time we found ourselves as a 5 seed we ended up winning the District Championship. I expect nothing less this year.”
“We haven’t been playing to the best of our ability and we wanted to use this game to get us ready for playoffs,” Karson said.
Swogger knows the team can’t look to far ahead and need to stay focused on the next game.
“We need to take one game at a time, but our ultimate goal is to win Districts and advance into the state playoffs,” said Karson.
The Lady Blue Devils look to improve on their win street this week as they take on the 11-8 Northern Bedford Panthers at home Wednesday, before playing the 19-1 Everett Warriors in a bout for the ICC Championship on Saturday at Claysburg-Kimmel.
Also last night, the wrestling team held its Senior Night against the Glendale Vikings. The careers of Nate Claar and Cameron Nagle were celebrated as it was their last home match.
Although the score was quite lopsided, 44-21, glimmers of hope shined for the future of the program.
Noah Schratzmeier won the first match of the evening with a 3-2 decision.
Following him up was Cameron Nagle. Wrestling inspired, Nagle fought to the final whistle but lost a 5-3 decision.
Malachi Harper also recorded a win, pinning his opponent in 1:18.
In the last match of the night, Nate Claar pinned his opponent in 3:14, improving his overall record to 25-5 on the season. The victory gave Nate 71 team points recorded this season.
