The Bellwood-Antis baseball team took an early lead in its home-opener yesterday as the Devils defeated West Branch Warriors 4-0.

Joe Padula got on base early in the first inning and Jordan McCracken then batted him in to make the score 1-0.

“I thought we played well for our first game,” said head coach Steve Conlon. “We didn’t hit spectacular, but that comes along. That was the first time they’ve seen live pitching.”

The score remained 1-0 up until the sixth inning as Cory Parson pitched a shut-out. Parson had seven strikeouts, one walk, and hit two batters in the league win yesterday.

Anytime you start with a conference game it’s good to get the win.

“It felt good to come out and be dominant the first game of the season, but we still have a lot to work on,” said Parson.

Parson allowed only two hits in the game against and is hoping to improve as the season continues.

“We were on edge, with only a one-run cushion,” said Parson. “I felt there was pressure on me not to give up anything.”

In the bottom of the sixth inning Trentin Whaley and Brendan Kowalski each had an RBI to help bat in the final three runs for the Blue Devils.

“Anytime you start with a conference game it’s good to get the win,” added Coach Conlon. “It’s our goal to win the conference, so it was a step in the right direction.”

“It was a good team win, and it’s good to get the season started with a victory,” said Joe Padula. “We hope we can carry the momentum into the following games.”

The Blue Devil baseball team will be back in action Thursday when it travels to Juniata Valley to take on the Hornets.
