If bathrooms aren’t broken, don’t fix them

Gender-neutral bathrooms are a hot topic. With the more people who are becoming transgender and the more cases of bathroom altercations, this idea has become more and more popular. People are warming up to the idea that unisex bathrooms may be a good idea.

Although many people think that these bathrooms are good, I think not.

First off, bathrooms should not be changed for the minority. The people who are affected by gender segregated bathrooms are transgender people. These people make up only about 0.002% of the U.S. population. That being said, we should not change our system because of a minute amount of people.

The next concern of the bathrooms are safety of people. People argue that transgender Americans would be more safe in same-gender bathrooms but the article even said, “Corral-style, same sex bathrooms can actually be a dangerous place.” If a trans person walks into room they might get beaten up, but the same is true if they walk into a gender-same bathroom. It just depends who is there at the time.

My third and final point is, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” I say this because there is no real problem with the gender-separate bathrooms we have been using since they were invented. Men and women are very different, which is why we separated the bathrooms in the first place. If we make gender-neutral bathrooms we might as well also make gender-neutral locker rooms. In the article it said that once a 9-year old boy was murdered in a men’s room.  This case in the article happened 20 years ago! If bathroom murder was a problem then we should see more recent examples.

In conclusion, I believe that gender-neutral bathrooms would not be a good idea. We should not change our bathrooms for a very small amount of people who are bothered by them. We also shouldn’t change the bathrooms because they would be no more safer than the are now. And finally, we should not change the bathrooms when there is no real problem.
