On Tuesday the Lady Blue Devils traveled to Mount Union to take on the Lady Trojans. Although nearly squandering a seven run lead the undefeated (12-0) Blue Devils did what they do best: Win.

Freshman second baseman Krystina Taylor summed up the game nicely

“A win is a win; we did what we needed to do to get the win,” she said after her team narrowly won 9-8.

The team went into the fifth inning with a comfortable 7-2 lead. In the top half of the inning B-A added two more runs to increase their lead.

However the bottom half of the inning is where the wheels began to fall off. Due to three errors, Mount Union was able to push across four runs in the frame, shrinking the Bellwood-Antis lead to just three runs.

After going scoreless in the top of the sixth two more costly B-A errors allowed Mount Union to score two more runs in the inning making the score 9-8.

The kids adapted and overcame a stressful situation and finished what they started.

Another scoreless frame in the top of the seventh for the Blue Devils put the pressure on; however senior Taylor Shildt retired the side in order to preserve the win for B-A.

“Being tested is never a bad thing,” said Coach Jim Payne. “The best lessons in life are learned when things don’t go as planned. The kids adapted and overcame a stressful situation and finished what they started.”

Junior Centerfielder Saige McElwain led the way offensively for the Blue Devils, going 4-for-5 with two doubles.

Coach Payne was pleased with his team’s will to rise up to the occasion and get the victory even though things got tough for his squad at points.

“The kids adapted and overcame a stressful situation and finished what they started. The goal was to stay the course and the girls did exactly that,” he said.
