On Wednesday the Blue Devil baseball team lost their second straight ICC contest to Mount Union, the defending ICC Champs. After a two-out rally in the seventh, B-A came up short and lost the game 8-5 in Mount Union.

The team has had a hard time making plays to avoid a “big inning” and they know that they need to fix this in order to win big games.

“Yesterday we gave up five runs in the second inning and none of them were earned. We need to clean that up,” said left fielder Brendan Kowalski.

Brendan contributed two hits on the day, with one being a double.

Junior Blake Johnston started the game for B-A and was later relieved by freshman Travis Luensmann.

Bellwood pitchers struck out two batters on the day and allowed 8 walks, while Mount Union pitchers struck out 10 and walked 6.

After one run through six innings, B-A had a little bit of two out magic in the final inning but the 8-1 deficit was too large for the Devils to overcome.

“We need to do a better job at the plate by having a better approach and not waiting until there’s one out left in the game to start stringing together some hits and runs,” said senior Joe Padula.

The loss is not what hurt Bellwood the most.

During the game junior Jack Showalter broke his wrist and may be out for the rest of the season. This happened after senior Sawyer Kline tweaked his hamstring in the first game of the season against Juniata Valley. With both of these players injured, sophomore Trentin Whaley will be doing the catching for the Devils.

“It’s important that he gets experience with a lineup that can change easily like this season. It’s especially vital now that we have two experienced players out,” said Sawyer about Trentin.

The team will look to bounce back tonight after facing two very good teams in their first two games. They will play tonight at Glendale. Nevin Wood will look to get his first win of the season on the mound.
