One of B-A’s greatest basketball teams will be in Bellwood to be honored on January 12 during a home game at the Bellwood-Antis High School gymnasium.
In 1974, the boys varsity basketball team gathered 22 total wins to solidify a perfect regular season for the first time since 1947. No other B-A basketball team has ever matched this near impossible record. The 73-74 Devils also won other awards, such as the Juniata Valley League championship.
The players who will be honored are Bruce Clark, Calvin Shoenberger, Carl Crider, Daryl Nearhoof, Dean Shaffer, Gary Hribik, Joe Delgrosso, Lee Gingery, Michael Moses, Thomas Otto, and Ted Mclellan. Ricky Sprankle and R. Dillen were the team’s two managers. Coach Mike Sakash, who later became a B-A principal, led the team with only three years of head coach experience. By his side was Greg Perry who assisted in coaching with Sakash.
The unsurpassed and undefeated 1973-74 basketball team will be recognized for its gold anniversary at some point during the game against Juniata Valley next week.
