The baseball team took a trip to cross-town rival, Tyrone, to play in the Backyard Brawl on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles soared victorious over the Blue Devils, winning 5-3.
The Blue Devils held the Golden Eagles scoreless for five innings, but it wasn’t enough as Tyrone got all five runs in strong fourth inning.
Chris Walls got the start on the mound, going for 3 2/3 innings. Walls held Tyrone scoreless through the third inning. He was able to get the first out of the bottom of the fourth, then the Golden Eagles drew two walks and Owen Oakes drove in a run on a single to tie the game at 1-1. Tyrone’s Landon Poestreich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The next three Tyrone hitter all pieced a single to score the four runs.
Walls struck out one and allowed five runs on five hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work.
Alex McCartney came it to relieve Walls and close the game, throwing 2 1/3 innings. He was able to shutout the Golden Eagles, striking out two and allowing no hits or runs.
In the top of the fifth, Bellwood tried to respond to Tyrone’s strong inning, but weren’t able to respond completely. The Blue Devils were able to put up two runs, coming from a Chase Plummer sac fly and Zach Pier on an RBI single.
Matt Berkowitz went 2-3 with a double and a run scored.
With the loss to Tyrone, B-A is now back to .500 at 6-6 and travel to Richland to take on the 8-4 Rams, today at 4:30.
