The Fault In Our Stars book was released in 2012, and quickly became a favorite book for many people.
The author, John Green, was inspired by Esther Earl. John had worked at a children’s hospital when his best friend Esther died of thyroid cancer in 2010 at 16. So John decided he wanted to work and talk with other children who had cancer and create a book dedicated to Esther.
This story is about a young girl who went to a support group one day and met a boy named Augustus. They immediately had some type of chemistry between them. Hazel, the young girl has cancer in her thyroids which is why she goes to this support group. Her friend, Issac, also has cancer but he has to loose his eye sight. Augustus, also known as Gus, is Issac’s friend who goes to his support group with him. After Gus and Hazel meet he asks for her name, but not just her first name, her full name. This makes her interested in the way he is because he asks for more than just the simple questions.
Shortly after the meeting of Gus and Hazel, they begin texting and calling. Later, she figures out he also had cancer and lost his leg due to it. Hazel and Gus have two different mindsets. He wants to make the most out of his life where Hazel wants the least impact on her life. Due to the circumstances hazel tries to keep Gus in a distance but eventually opens up and falls in love with Gus. The only problem is Hazel has a friend who is all up on her man.
As the book goes on Gus and Hazel begin to hangout a lot more causing them to both be in deep love. They do many things together such as go to see Hazels favorite author, watch movies together, play video games and even just sit and talk to each other. There love story is one of a kind until things go down hill.
Gus had found out he has cancer again but instead of just in his leg it spread across his entire body including his head. Knowing the sad news still didn’t stop him from being with hazel and continuing on. Eventually, they both have to find out that Gus has cancer everywhere. Until one night Gus had called her and said he needed her badly at a gas station when he was trying to buy a new pack of cigarettes. He had thrown up everywhere and his g-tub was infected so Hazel had to call the ambulance. This caused Gus to be in a wheel chair and he knew he was going to die. He even made himself a funeral.
Then one night Hazel woke up from hearing a call on the home phone. It was the call telling her parents Gus had passed away. Hazels whole world had fallen right between her hands and she could do nothing about it.
Once Gus funeral came she had a whole speech to say to him but she couldn’t speak it. She spoke what she felt was right to say at that time and how she was feeling. Gus was a great guy to her and she loved him dearly.
The book The Fault In Our Stars even came out with a movie, in June of 2014. If I were you, I would watch the movie before you read the book because it helps you understand more. And it wont have you going crazy knowing what happens next.
If I could choose an age range of people to read this book I would recommend it for teens. This book may be interesting and better to teen girls rather than guys but guys may find the way Gus is, or the way Hazel treats Gus nice. Just the same as it’s interesting for girls, that Gus is such a good guy. Older people may even like this book because of the cancer part of it, and knowing that there is something better than just cancer, out of the book.
