Socktober is an event that takes place annually in October and gives people a chance to help others in need.
The goal of the event is to collect socks donated for homeless Americans who do not have proper foot covering. At the Bellwood-Antis Middle School, Socktober is in full effect.
Mrs. Ruda Burns, who is spearheading the initiative, says that the student council is trying to do something nice in and out of school.
“I have always had a heart for the homeless, so I suggested it because I thought it was helpful and manageable,” Mrs. Burns said
An estimated of 600,000 people live on the street in the United States and struggle to care for themselves. Out of all the things that can be donated to the homeless, socks are one of the things needed most because they get offered the least. This event is to show that even donating something as simple as a pair of socks can make a difference.
Last year, 377 pairs of socks were donated at B-A and ended up helping the Hope Drop-In Center and Family Services, two local homeless shelters.
“This year there is a new homeless shelter opening in Tyrone, so we are hoping to bless them as well,” said Mrs. Burns.
