Holden Schreier may be the most overlooked quarterback in the Eastern Division of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference, and that’s just fine with the Blue Devils.
Coming into the 2024 season, the East was loaded with experienced signal callers with heavy credentials, players like BG’s Chase Kissell, Central’s Eli Muthler, Bald Eagle’s Carson Nagle, and Tyrone’s Ashton Walk.
However, very quietly Schreier has snuck up on the conference passing leaders. In fact, in the four head-to-head matchups he’s had with those other quarterbacks, Schrier is 2-2 and he’s played very well.
But the senior never shined as brightly as he did last week in the Blue Devils’ 34-33 win over Bishop McCort in a Laurel Highlands Week 10 crossover game.
Needing a spark on offense, B-A turned to Schreier, who completed 17 of 25 passes for a school record 354 yards.
For his one-of-its kind performance, Schreier has been named the BluePrint’s Athlete of the Week.
“It feels good,” Schreier said. “I had the help of everyone – the receivers running good routes, the lineman blocking, and Coach Walker calling good plays. All of that helped me to break that record.”
Schreier did more than break it. He shattered it. The previous record for a single game was 258 set by Jarrett Taneyhill in 2016.
“He would agree it’s a whole-team record it takes a lot to make that happen,” Coach Nick Lovrich said. “He had a great game. He was a field general. I’m real happy with his performance.”
For the season, Schreier has completed 88 of 151 passes for 1,418 yards and 10 touchdowns. More important for the Blue Devils, he has thrown just 4 interceptions. His play has been a major component in the Devils’ turnaround season, despite losing two starting running backs to injury.
“He makes very good decisions, and that’s part of our success,” Lovrich said. “He’s such a competitor. He wants to do everything he can to help us win. There will be some games where he doesn’t have to do a lot, but when we need him to do some things, he is able to.”
B-A will need Schreier to continue that level of accuracy this week when the Devils travel west to face River Valley in the first round of the District 6 2A playoffs.
Game time is 7 p.m. on Friday.
