Thanks to strong leadership from their senior captain, the Bellwood-Antis varsity cheerleaders tuned up for Districts December 7 with a strong finish at their most recent competition.
On Sunday, varsity cheerleaders attended The Launch at The Miller Center in Lewisburg. They ended up placing in 2nd and increased their score from last competition. The squad did very well, and their routines were clean and stunts hit.
Varsity competes at districts at the Altoona Fieldhouse next month. Their goal is to make it to states, which would be in January.
Coach Chrissy Shura gave credit to senior captain Gigi Juart for helping lead the team in the right direction.
“Gigi Juart is a great leader and always has a good attitude,” Coach Shura said. “She always cheers on her teammates and encourages them.”
The entire squad is composed of Juart; juniors Brylee Hewitt and Reagan Ball; sophomores, Peyton McCahan, Morgan Snowberger, Mady Sisto, Hayden Laird, Emma Tannyhill, Avey Powers, Ava Moore, Alaina Johnson and Addison Kovac; and freshmen Kadence Kelley and Brooke Gottshall.
Last week, on Wednesday, the cheerleaders competed at the Laurel Highlands championships but did not place in the top 3. However, they had no falls and their stunts looked good.
“We performed with more confidence,” McCahan said when comparing their most recent competition to the LHAC championships. “It gave us a better idea that if we can keep improving our stunts it will make us better for Districts.”
The team needs to work on minor things but overall they’re doing very well,” Coach Shura said.
“For the first LHAC Championship it was a good experience for teams and coaches. We look forward to next year,” she said.
Coach Shura said that looking back at videos from camp, the cheerleaders have improved and that has come from hard work.
