Have you ever made a gingerbread house? Do you give up like me and just start eating it?
If you love to make gingerbread houses, then today is your day! December 12 celebrates National Gingerbread House Day.
Gregory of Nicopolis, who was an Armenian monk, brought gingerbread to Europe during 992 AD and taught the French Christians to make it. Gingerbread used to only be eaten for religious celebrations.
But, the Brothers’ Grimm were the ones to invent the gingerbread house! They introduced it to the Germans through the fairy tale of Hansel and Gretle, who lives in a gingerbread house. They then started to make them more festive and cute.
The largest gingerbread house stands at 60 feet long and 42 feet wide, and 10 feet tall!
Many families have a tradition of making gingerbread houses every year around Christmas.
You can do many things to celebrate National Gingerbread Day like, making a gingerbread house, eating gingerbread cookies, reading Hansel and Grettle, or hosting a gingerbread house making party.
