FID days are more prominent than ever right now in Bellwood-Antis.
After recent events at the school affected students’ ability to attend classes, the district had to adapt. It was announced Tuesday morning that students would have a week of these Flexible Instruction Days.
Normally used in place of snow days, this week’s FID days were in response to a fire Tuesday morning that destroyed portions of the middle school. School was closed Tuesday and remained that way the rest of the week as the district moved to repair and clean the affected areas.
Leading into Christmas break, teachers and students took a big hit when their plans to end the first semester had to be altered. Any class that had planned on taking their midterms this week needed to reschedule to after Christmas break, or just cancel them altogether. While this is a downside, teachers could still use these days to assign work and give extra practice to their students. Each day, kids could use Google Classroom to get their work done virtually for the day.
“It was a nice way to ease into the break”, said senior Holden Schreier when asked about FID days. “However, I was also not very motivated to complete my work”.
Virtual work days like these for students are reminiscent of Covid-19, when students learned from home for months on end. The result across the country was a decrease in test scores and overall will to learn. It was a tough time for students worldwide and most people would prefer to be in school with their peers.
Luckily, students are expected to return to school by January 2, which is when they would’ve come back from break anyway. Bellwood-Antis School District is confident that its students will be back to learning in person as soon as the break comes to a close.
