Last Friday, it was announced that senior Cayden Pellegrine and junior Colin Gibbons made the first team on the Pennsylvania Football News Class 2A All-State team.
This award is very prestigious and only the best players in Pennsylvania are given this honor.
“It’s nice to see both Cayden and Colin be honored for the play they had this year,” said head coach Nick Lovrich, whose team used the breakout play Pellegrine and Gibbons to propel the Devils to an 8-4 record, rebounding solidly from a 2-win season in 2023.
“It’s always good to see your guys be recognized, especially after playing some good teams this season.”
Both players played their roles to the best of their ability, even if they weren’t the ones they had expected to fill.
Gibbons won the award for his performance at slot and halfback. When star running back Alex McCartney tore his ACL over the offseason, Gibbons stepped up in the backfield. He ended the season with 120 carries for 688 yards and 33 receptions for 376 yards. Colin accounted for 9 total touchdowns over the course of the year.
“It means a lot,” said Gibbons. “All-State definitely isn’t easy to make, so being able to represent Bellwood alongside my teammate is an honor.”
Pellegrine earned All-State for his work at outside linebacker. He led the team by far with 95 total tackles this season. Pellegrine also recovered three fumbles and deflected four passes.
“It’s nice to see all the hard work that I did get recognized,” said Pellegrine. “I’m happy that I got to have a good senior season, and this achievement makes it that much more special.”
Other area players making the first team include Bald Eagle Area’s Carson Nagle, who was voted on as a quarterback, and Bedford athlete Quincy Swann. Making the second team were Mount Union running back Nassir Collins, Richland wide receiver AUstin Yarnick and kicker Noah Ritko, and Bald Eagle linebacker Wyatt Spackman and kicker Grady Fisher.
