Language is powerful. The words we use shape the way we see others and influence how we treat them.
For years the word “retard” was used as a clinical term, but over time, it evolved into a casual insult- one that is often used to demean, exclude, or belittle people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. That’s why the campaign Spread the Word to End the Word has launched: to promote inclusion and respect through thoughtful language.
The r-word has become a slur. even when used without malice. It carries a long history of discrimination and marginalization, for people with intellectual disabilities, and their families and friends, hearing this word used as a joke or insult can be painful and dehumanizing. It reinforces negative stereotypes and contributes to a culture of exclusion.
Spread the Word to End the Word began in 2009 as a grassroots campaign led by young people, in partnership with Special Olympics and Best Buddies. It quickly grew into a national and then global movement, encouraging individuals to pledge to stop using the r-word and instead speak with kindness, acceptance, and empathy.
B-A recognized Spread the Word week from April 7-11 with special dress up spirit days and a pledge to not use the r-word.
Each year, on the first Wednesday of each month, communities, schools, and organizations around the world come together to raise awareness and take a pledge to choose respectful and inclusive language.
The campaign promotes that when people eliminate the use of the r-word from their vocabulary, they’re doing more than just changing a word-they’re changing attitudes. It signals that we see the dignity and value in every person. it helps build communities where everyone feels welcomed, supported, and empowered.
At B-A, teachers from the special education department provided a Spread the Word banner and placed it outside of the cafeteria. This prominent positioning helped it garner more than 400 signatures.
For anyone looking to take a virtual pledge, they can visit About Spread the Word and take the pledge to use respectful, inclusive language. educate yourself and others.
According to Spread the Word, the words we choose reflect the world we want to create. By choosing respect, we take a step toward a more inclusive and compassionate society. Let’s spread the word to end the word- and start a conversation that leads to real change.
