Play your part, be water smart!

Myers Elementary fourth grade student Alexis Franks placed second in a poster contest that was sponsored by the Blair County Conservation District and the Altoona Water Authority.

The contest was open to all Blair County students: public, private, and home schooled grades K-12.

The goal of the contest was to help raise awareness about water conservation.

“I thought my poster was terrible,” says Alexis. “I did not expect to win at all and I was very surprised!”

Alexis’ poster consisted of the world in the center with a faucet coming out of it. Instead of water coming out of the faucet, there were words about water conservation pouring out. Four large rain drops appeared in each corner.

By collaborating with her friends and swapping ideas, Alexis was able to bring together an award-winning poster. Her prize for second place was $40.00.

“I think water conservation is very important,” says Alexis. “If we don’t save water now, the world could eventually run out. I help out by taking shorter showers and turning the water off when I brush my teeth.”

Alexis received her award at the annual Blair County Earth Day celebration at the Logan Valley Mall on April, 23.
