Do you love to play chess or want to learn how. Well now you can, and you do it with a little more frequency than the occasional activity period.

Mr. Goodman, the Earth Science teacher and Chess Club advisor, has created an after-school Chess Club.

“The club gives students an opportunity to learn more about the game and to enjoy friendly competition in playing chess,” says Mr. Goodman.

Mr. Goodman hopes that kids who decide to come will learn lots of things.

“First, a sense that competition can be fun and friendly. Second, to improve their logic skills,” he said. “And finally, to get an appreciation for a game they can enjoy their entire life.”

Club members agree that you can learn a lot from playing chess.

“I like the game. You actually have to think and plan ahead,” said freshman Jordan Irwin.

Mr. Goodman is hoping that they can continue getting students interested in chess, although membership has been robust this year. During activity period the club has had up to 45 students showing up.

Mr.Goodman said that in March the Chess Club is planning a chess tournament, and he hopes that having an after-school chess club will help in developing the students skills in chess.

The after-school Chess Club will meet every other Monday starting January 22, from 3 to 4 p.m.
