The Lady Devil volleyball team won the Bellwood-Antis High School Girls Volleyball Invitational on Saturday for the first time in more than a decade. Bellwood’s head coach Sophie Damiano played on the team from 2013 to 2017 and never won it, but was excited to finally bring this sweet victory to the team she leads.
“We were all excited,” said senior Chloe Brown. “Last year we got second. It was just really nice to finish the day with a win.”
The team went 5-1 in pool play, then won the Gold Bracket against Clarion Limestone. The teams that were in Bellwood’s pool were Everett, Mifflin County, Clarion Limestone, and United, all teams who are undefeated in the regular season.
Even with this tough competition the Lady Blue Devils only lost one set to Clarion Limestone, but made up for that set by beating them in the Gold Bracket Championship.
The final score of the championship game was 26-24. Ava Patton was the Blue Devil’s MVP for this tourney.
B-A couldn’t hold the momentum and lost at home on Tuesday night against Penns Valley, 3-2. After dropping the first set, the Lady Devils were on the verge of victory after winning the second and third sets 26-24 and 25-21.
But the Lady Rams had different plans. Valley came back to win 25-16 in the third before closing it out with a 15-8 victory in the fifth set.
Addy Turek led B-A with 13 kills.
