National Leap Day happens every four years at the end of February. So instead of the end of February being the 28th this year, its the 29th.
The history behind National Leap day is, Julius Casaer and astronomer Sosigenes who revamped the Roman calendar giving it 12 months with nearly equal distributed days and adding a leap day every 4 years.
Then in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII adjusted the calendar. Because the earth revolves around the sun every 365.2421 days. This designed the calendar we use today that only has one leap day every 4 years and the calendar is called The Gregorian Calendar.
Besides the history of leap day, another cool thing is that people actually have birthdays on February 29th which means every 4 years they get to officially celebrate there birthday.
According to different polls, most people born on leap day choose to celebrate on February 28th during non-leap years.
So today if you know someone that has a birthday on this date, go ahead and tell them happy birthday. And enjoy today because this only happens every four years.
