Are guys the biggest prom accessory?

Prom season is always an exciting time for junior and senior girls.

They need a dress, their hair done, nails done, shoes, makeup, jewelry, and other accessories.

But, really, what is the biggest accessory?  The date of course!

Junior Justin Gunsallus, who is taking classmate Hannah Klesius, said, “Yes, I do feel like an accessory to the girl. The girl seems to be the main focus of prom, as it should be. I don’t say it as a bad thing, I want her to be the main focus of the night.”

Nick Perry, a junior feels the same.

“Girls are the main part of prom with their dresses and we guys are there to escort them. I don’t choose the colors I wear.  The color is based off of Mariah’s dress,” said Perry, who is taking Mariah Younker.

“Obviously prom is oriented towards girls. They get to dress up and be ‘in the lime light.’ The girls are the ones who plan it, dream about it, and needs it to be perfect,” said Justin.

When asked who is more into prom, Nick said, “Girls definitely! I’m excited about it, but not as much as the girls.  They get to dress up in whatever dress they want very rarely. This is the perfect opportunity for them to do so.”

Junior Noah Burns said prom is supposed to be all about the girl.

“The guy is supposed to focus mainly on her. Usually, I will look at what my date is wearing and color coordinate with her. I also think girls are more into prom because it is stressful for the guy to rent a tux and try to make it fun as possible for the girl.”

Matching outfits and accessories are also a way of marking your territory, according to junior Caroline Showalter.

“I’m just sending a picture of my dress to Ryan and he’s getting a matching vest and tie. Girls control what their date wears because it makes obvious that they are there together,” she said.

“You want the guy to wear the same colors as you so the two of you don’t clash and look like you’re someone else’s date,” said Emilee Astore.
