Collin Gibbons had an eye-opening game last Friday in the Backyard Brawl, and it’s players like him who make teams like 4-1 Bellwood-Antis go, his coach said.
“He is a very good player on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. People like Collin are what you need to have on a successful football team,” said Coach Nick Lovrich.
For this reason Colin is the BluePrint’s Athlete of the week.
Gibbons is a junior running back and cornerback for the Blue Devil football team. This year he leads the team in rushing yards with, 59 carries for 395 yards. He also is tied for first on the team with five rushing touchdowns. Colin also gets active in the receiving game with, 13 receptions for 112 yards.
Last week against Tyrone, Colin ran the ball 8 times for 37 yards and a touchdown in B-A’s 28-21 victory. He also had a pair of interceptions.
“Colin played a really good game last week in all 3 phases of the game,” said Coach Lovrich. “He has stepped up and done a lot of good things for our team so far this season.”
Along with what he does on offense, Colin is also a standout on the defensive side of the ball. He is a cornerback and has 31 total tackles. As a corner this is an unusually high amount of tackles this early in the season, but it is due to Colin’s physicality.
When asked about his physical play, Colin said, “Being small my whole life I knew it would be hard to assert my will, so being that much more physical than others makes it easier for me to get the job done”.
Midway through the season, he has two pass deflections and three interceptions.
Colin also participates in basketball, where he is looking to make a major impact this season. He will be entering is junior season and is looking at a more prominent role on the team.
In the spring, Colin spends his time on the track and field team, where he is a sprinter.
