On Wednesday, the Tyrone Golden Eagles traveled to Bellwood to take on the BA cross country teams.
Both the Blue Devils and Lady Blue Devils were victorious, including a thrilling tie-breaker victory for the boys.
The Blue Devils tied Tyrone, 29-29; however, Bellwood prevailed with the thanks to sophomore Keegan Shanafelt, who was the tie-breaker with as B-A’s sixth-place finisher.
Cameron Gallagher led the Blue Devils with a 3rd place finish. Martin Fatzinger finished 5th, McCaulley Corle finished 6th, Domanick Halerz finished in 7th and Mason Nagle finished 8th.
“It feels great,” said Cameron Gallagher, “It’s nice that I was able to help my team come out victorious in the Backyard Brawl.”
The B-A girls swept 1st through 5th place in a dominant 15-48 win.
With Julie Kraft taking 1st, Blake Pennington taking 2nd, Rylie Andrews taking 3rd, Chloe Stoltzfus taking 4th, and Payton Hammond taking 5th, the Lady Devils built a commanding lead early.
When asked about finishing first in the Backyard Brawl, Kraft said, “It’s pretty cool to be able to help the team win a meet against Tyrone. Running against Blake definitely helps me to improve my times.”
Pennington added she was proud of the team for getting better from year to year. “My teammates all contribute a lot to the team” she said.
Winning the Backyard Brawl is sweet enough; however, winning it on Senior Night makes it that much better. Before the meet the team recognized seniors, McCaulley Corle, Jacob Caracciolo, Rylie Andrews, Rowan Kyle, Trinity Maines, and Hannah Waite. As well as Senior Night celebrations, it is also PIAA Official Appreciation Week. Officer Mercer presented a certificate of appreciation to the official, Paula Foreman.
Next up for the teams is the LHAC championship on Wednesday, 10/16.
