B-A’s Scholastic Scrimmage team came within inches of a Quiz Bowl championship last week at the IU8 building in Altoona.
The team had advanced to playoffs two weeks earlier and last Tuesday claimed a 2-1 victory over Bedford in the semi-finals, earning a chance to compete with Hollidaysburg in the championship.
Unfortunately, B-A suffered a 3-1 defeat, making the team’s overall record 13-4 for the season.
In a brighter aspect, it was the best finish since 2022.
Mr. Martin, one of the advisors of Bellwood’s Scholastic Scrimmage team, said the team’s seniors led the way this season.
“They’ve been together since 7th grade and they were a staple of the program,” he said. “They overcame a first-round defeat to Bedford (in September) but couldn’t get over the Hollidaysburg hurdle.”
Most of the team is made up of seniors, so there are some big shoes to fill in for the 2025 school year. But, there are some talented underclassmen willing to take up the roles and expectations.
“It will be tough to replace that group because they have a lot of experience,” Mr. Martin said.
The team includes Holden Schreier, Derek Stivers, Briley Campbell, Eli Moser, Ryan Marinak, Emily Zacker, Marissa Cacciotti, Lilly McNelis, and Copper Lovrich.
