It was a tough opening week for winter sports teams at Bellwood-Antis, with the wrestling team, along with the girls and boys basketball teams, suffering lopsided losses, but each group will have the chance to get back to work before the weekend.
It started on Tuesday with a wrestling match in the middle school gymnasium. B-A took tough loss against Huntingdon, with a final score of 66-4. Vince Shank won his matchup by a major decision and scored the four points for the Blue Devils.
B-A will travel to Penn Cambria on Thursday for their next match. The match will begin at 7.
The Bellwood-Antis boys’ basketball team played their first official game of the season on Tuesday night at Hollidaysburg. B-A lost the game, with a final score of 57-25.
The Blue Devils had a difficult time getting things going on offense. The leading scorer for B-A was Martin Fatzinger, with 10 points. On the other side of things, Hollidaysburg’s offense couldn’t be stopped. Brady Steiner, who was the leading scorer for the game, had a total of 18 points. He shot an impressive 6-7 from three-point range.
A big part of the team is missing, with star player Holden Schreier currently injured. He was not able to play in this game, which could explain the large deficit in the loss.
The Lady Blue Devils kicked their season off Wednesday with a 58-28 loss to Hollidaysburg on the road. The Lady Tigers offense thrived and controlled most of the possession. B-A was cursed with a series of turnovers.
The Tigers had three double digit scorers en route to their win. Makenna Weimert led the offensive charge with a career-high 14 points. Clare Padamonsky added 12 more points, and Bella Vent scored 11.
Hollidaysburg defense was also able to force 28 turnovers limiting B-A’s possession time.
B-A’s Lilly Gerwert started her season strong with a 13 point game.
“We have to work on limiting turnovers and having more confidence in our scoring ability,” Gerwert stated.
The Blue Devils travel to Somerset Friday for a Laurel Highlands girls-boys doubleheader, where both teams look to bounce back against the Golden Eagles. The boys game begins at 6:00, and the girls follow at 7:30.
