For the Bellwood-Antis boys basketball team, the wins have not quite gotten rolling yet, but as for the girls, they found success Friday night in their first win.
Both B-A teams traveled to Somerset where they competed in a Laurel Highlands Conference girls-boys doubleheader. The Lady Devils’ offense came out hot and took care of Somerset with a 61-53 victory. The boys dropped their second in a row 52-44.
Junior center Lilly Gerwert led the offensive charge for the Lady Devils with a double-double, accounting for 26 of the Lady Devils points. She was also able to control the glass and bring in 10 rebounds. Jenna Norton added 14 points of her own, and Leigha Clapper closed out the scoring with 12.
“My teammates got me the ball when I was open, and I went strong from there,” Gerwert said. “We had to communicate the whole game and crash the glass to get rebounds.”
B-A had the advantage going into the half with a 28-22 score.
Somerset’s guards did their best to close the gap. Junior Eve Housley registered 23 points, and Abigail Stanton followed behind her with 19.
The boys’ game was a close battle throughout its entirety, with B-A trailing at halftime 23-20.
On the positive side, the Blue Devils had a much more efficient offense compared to their season-opening game against Hollidaysburg. Standout players were guard Jackson Dorminy, who had 15 points on the night, and forward Connor Mayes, who contributed 14 points.
“We need to make more shots and play overall better defense,” Dorminy says.
The main contributor for the Eagles was sophomore Aiden Roby, who had 24 points and three steals for the night.
The Lady Devils move to 1-1 on the season, and continue their road trip Wednesday at 7:30 against Huntingdon.
The B-A boys now have a record of 0-2. They look to improve this Monday night, where they play at home against Huntingdon. The game will start at 7.
