The Bellwood-Antis girls’ basketball team traveled to Huntingdon on Wednesday and came out on top with a final score of 59-35.
The Lady Blue Devils were ahead for the entire game, including a 27-18 lead at halftime.
This is B-A’s second win on the season, putting them at 2-1. The Huntingdon Bearcats are now 1-2.
“We got off to a slow start offensively and got a little sloppy with the ball. We settled into our own the next 3 quarters,” said B-A coach Kyley Longo-McGarvey. “Our kids adjusted well to the 2-3 and the box and 1 they threw at us. Our guards found the open man well and knocked down shots.”
Junior Lilly Gerwert had a very impressive performance, which played a huge role in the team’s win. Gerwert had a double-double, with game-highs of 20 points and 16 rebounds. Gerwert also had six blocks on the night.
“Lilly had a great all around game and let the game come to her. She battled against being triple teamed and a junk defense thrown her way,” said Longo-McGarvey.
Seniors Leigha Clapper and Jenna Norton also helped the team with their scoring. Clapper had 12 points, and Norton had nine.
“We struggled in the first quarter to score and rebound,” Clapper said. “We picked it up in the second and focused on boxing out and sharing the ball as a team.”
All in all, Longo-McGarvey felt it was a solid all-around performance involving many players.
“Marissa, Leigha, Karlie and Izzy stepped up on handling the ball, getting to the glass, and making shots to keep our runs alive,” she said. “Jenna was able to rip rebounds when we needed her to and collected 11 of them.”
For the Bearcats, senior Lily Fiscus had 19 points. Fiscus hit three 3-pointers, which was the most in the game.
The Lady Blue Devils are now looking at their next matchup, where they play at home against Philipsburg-Osceola. JV will start at 6, and Varsity will start at 7:15.
