It’s Frankenstein Day! (and Halloween)
Created by Mary Shelley in 1818, Frankenstein is a classic novel that launched the horror genre you know and love today. Frankenstein Friday, however, was created by Ron MacCloskey in 1997.
MacCloskey is originally from Westfield, New Jersey, also the hometown of Charles Addams (the creator of the Addams Family), so MacCloskey’s infatuation with Frankenstein does not come to much surprise.
The reason for this extraordinary is always on the last Friday of October is simply because of the “FR” connection.
English teacher Mrs. Susan Zong has her AP Literature and senior classes read the classic novel.
Zong stated, “It’s ultimately about man trying to control nature and the unintentional evil he unleashes. It also connects to mythology and Pandora’s Box, the curiosity of man.”
While almost everyone knows of the tale of Frankenstein, only the few who decide to read the novel actually know the truth about the horrifying novel.
Here is a short list of facts about Frankenstein you probably were not aware of:
-Frankenstein is Victor Frankenstein, not the monster, the monster has no name
-There is no Igor
-Although there have been multiple movie adaptations of the novel only very few are accurate to the original tale
“People like excitement and being scared is exciting,” Zong continued. “The movie versions inspire students to seek out the true story and they usually find they got more out of it than they realize. They make a lot of judgement at the end and that is really important.”
Go freaky for Frankenstein Friday and Monster Mash your way to Halloween with this magnificent day!
