Remember His Reckless Love

Check out the video by Cory Asbury and be inspired.

Yo!!! Whoa it has been a while my friends, a serious while. But we’re back, and ready to get after it once again with Lessons from the Man Upstairs. I’m so excited to be here and I’m so pumped to be sharing as much positivity to you, all year long! Woohoo!!!

Before I get going, though, let me roll it back. This summer was amazing; I went to the beach with my best friend and my family, as well as heading over to Ship cross country camp and getting my butt kicked by some really fast runners, but it was all good. Also, a few days ago my friend and I went to an Ed Sheeran concert and it was simply amazing, as well. I loved every single second of this summer because not only did I do some really awesome stuff, my family was healthy above all and I cannot even express in words how grateful I am to God that everyone was healthy and happy and man, summer was simply hard to leave.

But enough about me, let’s get this show on the road.

I’m going to start us off with something a little bit different. Today, we are going to analyze some song lyrics.

Now, I know what you are thinking. “Ugh, are you kidding me? Analyzing? I read these articles to get inspired not by analyzing.” I know, I know. But just stay with me here.

The song we’re going to look at today is called, Reckless Love, by Cory Asbury. This is one of my favorite songs and I think if you give it a chance, you will enjoy it, too. Before we go over it, you can listen to it in the link at the bottom of this article. It is a longer song, but listen to all of it! Now that you’ve jammed out, let’s talk lyrics.

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me1

You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me2

O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
O, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine3
I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it4, still, You give Yourself away
O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah

When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me5
You have been so, so kind to me

O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
O, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah

There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me6
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me

O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

O, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine

And I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away

O, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah

1God isn’t trying to outdo your really out of tune singing here, God is simply rejoicing over you with singing. He adores you so much! “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all you fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” —Zephaniah 3:17

2Sometimes, when we are in the midst of adversity, it can be especially difficult to praise God, and understand all that He has done for us. But when we take a moment to step back and comprehend all of God’s sacrifices, we are able to appreciate all that God has already done for us, despite the struggles right now. For example, when God created man, Genesis 2:7 says, “Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils and the man became a living person.”

3The “it” here is referring to God’s reckless love for us. He will fight tooth and nail for us all day long. God cares for us unconditionally, and when we begin to pay more attention to the world in front of us, before Him, He doesn’t just say, “well, that one’s a lost cause; not even going to bother caring for that child anymore.” Wrong! Wrong! When we stray from God without realizing it, God will do anything in His power to pull you back into His everlasting arms. In Isaiah 53:6, it says, “All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own.” THEN, it Ezekiel 34:16, God says, “I will search for my lost ones who strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the weak.”

4It is pretty fantastic that despite all of our sins we commit daily, God still loves us. We are undeserving and there is no way of earning God’s love. But the good news is, we already have it! We already have God’s love because He died for us. God gave His life for us, despite our horrific behaviors on earth. The word, “love”, in the bible is mentioned 189 times. “In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me.” —Psalm 59:10

5We must never forget why we are here today, living and breathing on this beautiful green earth. Without God, we would have never had city lights, sandy beaches, chocolate chip cookies, loud concerts, long runs, sweatpants, dogs, laughter, etc. We must make sure each and every day we are thanking God for all that He sacrificed for us. He did not have to give His life for our sins, but He did. And we need to be forever grateful for the ultimate sacrifice. He paid it all for us. “You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.” —Colossians 2:13-14

6God will do anything for you. It is that simple. He will light up shadows, climb mountains, kick down walls, and tear down lies for you. All you have to do is trust that He knows what He is doing and has an incredible plan for your life. Do not be discouraged. The Lord your God will personally go ahead of you and watch over every step you take each and every day.

This year is going to be a fantastic year. But even in the darkest times, remember, always pray. Pray. Pray. Pray. Release your worries and cares to God and put all your faith in Him because He cares for you.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.”

—Deuteronomy 31:6
