MOVIE MINUTE: Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a movie worth seeing.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World is a movie about Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) trying to get a girlfriend. Simple concept, but it’s not done there.

When Scott finds the girl of his dreams, he must then defeat her seven evil exes. x’s? ex’s? Doesn’t matter. The movie is mostly a comedy with seven well choreographed fight scenes. Eight may be more accurate, but he fights the same dude twice. Just watch the movie if you want an explanation.

A small detail that really improves the story is that the actors for each of our main characters learned how to play their instruments they used in the film, and that level of detail is why both the action and comedy work so well. The comedy in this movie is spot on, from simple word play, to actual diving out a window to avoid someone.

Part of the charm to the movie really comes from Edgar Wright, the director, and his decision to put a lot of video game references in the movie. Someone opens a door? Put the Legend of Zelda sound effect on it. A quick pan of Scott and his roommate, Wallace’s room shows who owns what in the house, and it is mostly Wallace cause Scott doesn’t have a job.

Fun details like that are what make this movie a must watch for anyone who enjoys movies.
