B-A nine lacks experience but has depth
March 26, 2021
The 2020 baseball season came to a unfortunate close after the COVID-19 shutdown on March 13. The 2020 Blue Devils were getting ready for what they thought would be a very successful season. Last year’s BA team was filled with talent and had a handful of solid pitchers, including Travis Luensmann, who now plays at South Carolina.
Some of that talent is depleted this season, but there’s a lot to be excited about for B-A.
The 2021 season officially started on March 8 and the Devils are gearing up to take the field for the first time in two years.
In 2019 BA went 13-8 and finished their season with a District semifinals loss to Bishop Guilfoyle.
The Blue Devils lost a lot of talent from last year’s senior class including John Kost, Mark Stewart, Dallas Hollen, Corey Johnston, Travis Luensmann, and Troy Walker, but BA has simply reloaded. Bellwood has a lot of good players returning that are ready to step up and have bigger roles on the team.
Senior Joe Dorminy batted .258 in 2019 and junior Jack Luensmann batted .255. BA will expect a lot out of these two this season. The rest of the lineup for the Devils doesn’t have much varsity experience, but they still look to have success at the plate.
The Blue Devils should have a sturdy defense and a good amount of depth on the mound as well. Jack Luensmann, Arik Shildt, Owen Shedlock, Dylan Barr, Zach Miller, and Zach Pellegrine will all be able to eat up innings on the mound and put the Devils in a good position to win.
Bellwood hopes to put together a deep playoff run this year, but the road to the district title will be much more difficult as BA moves up to the 3A classification.
In 2018 the Blue Devils lost to Southern Huntingdon in the District 6 2A Championship. This was the last district title appearance for Bellwood.
Bellwood will kick off its season this Friday as it travels to West Branch.
Everyone is excited to finally get to play some baseball again. Good luck to the baseball team this season! Go BA!
