Some people enjoy the convenience of an artificial tree while others opt for a traditional real tree.

When the Holidays roll around every year the age old debate is brought up; “Will we get a real or fake Christmas tree this year?

Christmas trees were developed around the 19^th century in Germany.  They made these “trees” with green dyed goose feathers.   The tree was traditionally decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts, or other foods.

In the 18th century, trees began to be illuminated by candles which were replaced by Christmas lights after the invention of electricity.  Today there is a wide variety of Christmas ornaments, such as garland, tinsel, and candy canes.  Also an angel or star is placed on top of the tree to represent the angel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem.

If you ask a person why they choose a real or artificial tree you’ll get many different answers, from its saves the environment to I just don’t want to take care of a tree.

We went around Bellwood and asked students and faculty which tree they’ll have in their house.

Math teacher Mrs. Stinson said, “I only like my fake tree because my family puts up the tree right after Thanksgiving. So a real tree would die before Christmas.”

A couple of our BA students said they felt there was a sense of tradition with a real tree.

Mr. Naylor  said, “I would love to have a fake tree because they are neat.  But my wife won’t let me have a fake Christmas tree.”

Entrance greeter Mrs. Deb said, “There are many reasons why I like real Christmas trees.  First of all my husband sells them, so I kind of have to like them.  And another reason I like them is because they look pretty and smell good.”

Alexis Mayhue said, “I like fake trees because they’re easy and less of a hassle than real trees.”
