Do you ever wish that Bellwood had longer delays? Maybe an extra hour off would be more efficient for the students and staff?
The weather is a tricky thing to navigate when it comes to school and its hard to know when its safe or unsafe for students to be on the roads or in the extreme weather.
I think that introducing 3-hour delays would have its downsides and upsides, But overall it would be very positive for Bellwood.
Picture this; Bellwood has already used all their FID days but the forecast calls for below zero temperatures until 11am. A 3-hour delay would be perfect for this scenario because it would give us time to let the temperatures rise without using one of our FID days or potentially using a snow day.
Of course, this would have to be approved by the principal and the superintendent before the plan followed through.
Principal Rick Schreier says that introducing 3-hour delays could be problematic because it’s not as clear cut as just adding an extra-hour to the delay.
”Sometimes a little extra time to clear the roads would make sense, but we would have to determine how much school we would lose. We have to find the balance of having too many 3 hour delays just like we do with FID days,” he says
Other schools like Altoona and Huntington have begun doing 3-hour delays and I think that Bellwood should also add them.
It would be a great idea for us to introduce them because we have some winters where snow is so heavy and the district uses all of its FID days early, which results in cutting into spring vacation time if more snow days are necessary. So instead of cutting into Easter break or summer break, we could have 3-hour delays to give the roads time to clear so we can go to school safety.
Recently, B-A even wshut down for cold weather, which a 3-hour delay would really help.
Do you like the idea of 3-hour delays, or do you think they are a waste of time?
