On Tuesday, April 21st about a dozen Boy scouts and their troop leaders gathered in front of the Blair County Courthouse for a flag raising ceremony. This event was a part of the Flags Across the Commonwealth. This event was mainly for the nations 250th anniversary.
Even though this gesture might seem small, it has grown significantly – as there has been 38 different courthouses and significant landmarks where the flags have flown.
The main point of this 250th anniversary or America250 is that on July 4th, 2026, it will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
They have a whole website dedicated to this stuff which is called America250. This website and goal for America250 is actually ran by the Task Force 250 which was established by an executive order of the president to mobilize all the federal agencies in support of the 250th anniversary. It’s to coordinate related presidential initiatives connected to the Semiquincentennial.
This Task Force also established Freedom 250, an initiative associated with activities and programming connected to the anniversary.
All of these efforts have been going on since 2021.
The America250 has a goal of “350 for 250” which is essentially where all 350 million Americans engage in birthday celebration. It is being promoted in many ways and across many fields. In homeroom last week, for example, students received a book full of info and coloring pages.
This whole event started in Philadelphia on February 8th and is supposed to conclude in Pittsburgh on Flag Day, June 14th.
So, all in all, it’s our jobs to celebrate 250 great years of America.
