May 4th isn’t a holiday in the usual sense. We still come to school, follow the same schedule, and go through a normal day. But somehow, it still feels a little different.
Throughout the day, you’ll hear people say, “May the Fourth be with you.” It’s a simple play on a well-known movie line, but it’s turned into something a lot bigger than that. It’s one of those things that people recognize right away, even if they’re not huge fans.
Walking through the halls today, there were small things that stood out. A few people wore themed shirts, some teachers mentioned it during class, and there were conversations that probably wouldn’t have happened on any other day. Nothing over the top, just enough to change the mood a little.
What makes this day interesting is how it brings people together in a quiet way. You don’t have to be a big fan to understand it or take part in it. It’s just something simple that people can share, even if it’s just saying the phrase or talking about a favorite movie.
And there’s something for everyone, from the original trilogy of Episodes 4, 5, and 6 (Star Wars (A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi for the old heads), to the prequels, cartoons series like The Clone Wars and Rebels, and even the live action series popularized on Disney like The Mandalorian and Andor.
Beyond that, Star Wars is special because of the merch: light sabers, action figures, trading cards, clothing. It has permeated every area of daily life.
It also shows how something from a movie can stick with people for a long time. The ideas behind it: friendship, loyalty, and doing what’s right, are things that connect with a lot of people, which is probably why this day continues to be recognized.
Even though May 4th isn’t official, it still manages to make an ordinary school day feel a little more meaningful. It’s not about big celebrations, it’s just about having something small that people can enjoy together.
