Tune Talk: Twenty One Pilots

Willie Williams, Staff Writer

Most of you that are my friends are going to be surprised to see that I’m writing this story mainly because of one simple opinion I have on this band. I hate them. There are so many things wrong with this band that I just had to put it out on story from but I’ve been holding back because I didn’t want to get negative reviews for this site. But let’s face it. I can’t hold back anymore.

There’s kids that go to this school that’re saying Twenty One Pilots are the “reincarnation” of My Chemical Romance. There are so many reasons why that’s wrong, so let me break it down for you. People are saying that the singer from Twenty One Pilots, Tyler Joseph, sounds like My Chemical Romance’s lead singer, Gerard Way. Yeah, that couldn’t be anymore wrong. First I want you to play “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance, and then play “Stressed Out” by Twenty One Pilots. There’s literally no resemblance at all. If anything, I could actually straight up say that Tyler’s voice gives me a full on migraine. I don’t understand all the fuss over this band. They claim to be a ‘two member group’ but yet in all their songs there’s a synthesizing keyboard playing in the background. The only instruments those two play is bass guitar for Joseph and drums for Dun.

To make at least some of you Twenty One Pilots fans feel better, I tried really hard to get into their music but I just simply couldn’t stand Tyler’s voice. Now I actually DID say the same thing about Gerard Way’s voice in My Chemical Romance, but then I took a further listen in some of their other songs and I found out that I love My Chemical Romance. I tried the same thing with Twenty One Pilots, and yeah….no. I still hate them.

Don’t even get me started on how the two decided to pull their pants down during an award show whenever they received an award for “Best Duo Performance.” Once again, they’re not a duo unless the keyboard is being played by one of the trees in the “Stressed Out” music video. Anyways, they decided to pull their pants off and walked onto the stage to accept their award. That couldn’t have honestly been anymore stupid. They didn’t even deserve that award. Let’s all be honest here. Lukas Graham or The Chainsmokers deserved to win that award that year. At least The Chainsmokers are an actual duo.

I guess I could go through their albums now. Their first album was released back in 2009, it was their self-titled album. Of course it’s basically the same as all of their current music except that it’s more synthesized these days. So it’s much worse nowadays. I don’t have the time nor the effort to go through ALL of their albums so I’ll skip ahead all the way to 2013 whenever they released “Vessel.” This album was when it got these guys known somehow with songs like “Car Radio,” “House of Gold,” “Migraine,” and “Guns for Hands.” I can tell you right now, that “Migraine” is true to its title because I definitely got a migraine from listening to that song.

“Blurryface” was released in 2015. This is the album that is BEYOND overrated in the music industry today. On it, they released songs like “Heavydirtysoul,” “Fairly Local,” “Doubt,” “Goner,” and of course the one the radio wouldn’t stop playing, “Stressed Out.” I’ve got no words for this album, you all already know I hate all of their music. It’s beyond too techno and whatnot to be classified as rock and/or punk.

So here’s my summary. This band is beyond overrated. I don’t care what anyone says. They’re not emo. They’re not rock. They’re just like The Chainsmokers. They’re pure pop. Stop comparing them to My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, or whatever other emo band you’re comparing them to. And stop comparing Machine Gun Kelly to Kurt Cobain. I understand that has nothing to do with this story, but just stop. You’re all hurting my head.
