Athlete of the Week: Alex Roberts
November 2, 2018
Junior Alex Roberts was at a disadvantage this year with a hand injury mid season. But like any dedicated high school athlete, he powered through and finished out the year with great success.
“This was a great year, for me personally, even with the injury. We’ve had a lot of success as a team too,” said Roberts.
As it stands, Roberts has 211 career saves with a save percentage of 83.7%. This season he played in 11 games and he had 103 saves, 20 goals against, and 3 shuts outs at the end of the season.
“Alex is the type of player every coach wants on his team. He stands for all of us what a student athlete should be,” explained head coach, Nick Miller.
“I love being a part of the soccer team. We do need to start looking at each other as family and play the game as one. Towards the end we started to come together more,” said Roberts.
This year was unlike many others. The co-op team won themselves a spot in the District 6 Championship game against Bellefonte on Tuesday but came up short with a score of 2-1. He said, “Bellefonte had two lucky goals and we couldn’t have played any harder. It was such an awesome experience whether we won or not!”
With his junior season being over, Roberts isn’t done. “I start club practices and tournaments soon. I’m working to keep improving my skills and being a leader as I move towards my senior year,” he said.
His goal is to make it a full season without injury. “We will see how that goes for me though,” joked Roberts.
Good luck to Alex Roberts as he heads into his club season and we expect to see big things in his senior season here at Bellwood!
