Defense was key last Friday for the Blue Devils as they secured a 35-21 win over Bald Eagle Area in the first round of the District 6 2A playoffs.

Bellwood forced Bald Eagle to turn the ball over six times, with the Blue Devils securing 3 interceptions, 3 fumble recoveries, a sack, and a blocked field goal.

Cooper Guyer, a junior linebacker had a game to remember last Friday, recording 2 interceptions, and 1 fumble recovery. Senior Ty Noonan, a defensive back also put on a show for the Blue Devils with 2 fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.

The Blue Devils offense also balled out in regular fashion, tallying up 232 rushing yards, and 113 receiving yards as a team. Zach Mallon rushed for 192 of the 232 yards, and racked up 3 rushing TD’s, and 1 receiving.

“We played very well as a whole,” said Guyer. “There were just a couple fluke plays that could have easily been prevented, such as that touchdown right before the half.”

This Friday the Blue Devils will host Richland at Memorial stadium in the District 6 2A semifinals.

“Richland runs the ball a lot more,” said Guyer. “So the linebackers will be focused more on stopping the run all night. We believe we have the speed and athleticism in the defensive side of the ball to match up with Richland.”

“Anytime you can win in the playoffs it always feels good,” said head coach Nick Lovrich. “We talk all season about how weird this season has been, and to be able to win a big game like this under these circumstances is outstanding.”

Richland goes into this game coming off a win over Central Cambria, boasting a record of 6-1.
